Staying sober is not always straightforward and long term. It could take several attempts and years of rehabilitation to remain sober. During this time, a person has to work on mending broken relationships with family members and friends.

Never make promises

People who are addicts often make countless promises that they cannot keep. They may promise to pay back money that they borrow or promise to find a job or promise to get sober by the end of the year. Most of their promises are never fulfilled and are only excuses to provide false senses of relief.

Create an action plan

After becoming sober, it’s important to learn how to make realistic goals and not make empty promises. An action plan includes a list of achievable goals, actions and deadlines. Most family members and friends prefer to see actual results than hear about plans that may never come true.

Follow up

Most people prefer to see proof that something has happened. So a newly sober person has to follow up with the results of an action plan. It’s recommended to follow up every time that a major goal is completed.

Appeal to the other person’s interests

Addicts have a habit of making the entire conversation about them and their problems. It’s time for a former addict to acknowledge the needs of other people and include their ideas and thoughts in the conversation.

Spend quality time

Sometimes, the most effective method is to spend quality time with the other person. It’s ideal to choose an activity or location that the other person likes. Quality time is as simple as taking a walk in the neighborhood or sharing a photo album, but it shows respect and devotion to a loved one.

Mending any type of damaged relationship is possible with great attention and care. People who used to be addicted should be glad to leave behind a world of fear, danger and uncertainty. Being successful and sober involves showing patience and taking things more slowly and seriously than before. Being in healthy relationships could take many months or years to succeed at.
